Ever seen jewelry made of real butterfly wings?  

Sterling silver ring early 1900s.

Many butterfly wings are iridescent, as is the Blue Morpho.  These tropical butterflies have wings that are a lovely iridescent blue on the top, and brown on the bottom side.  Many were made as souvenirs from tropical climes, South America, Brazil.  

Butterfly wing jewelry is still being made today.  There are many beautiful examples.

Much of the contemporary Butterfly wing jewelry is made of the wings of butterflies which were found dead, at the end of their natural lifespans.  I cannot speak for the vintage pieces.
