Many folks today do not have the funds to buy Diamonds and Other Gemstones at Fine Jewelry stores.  When I was growing up, we went to Pawn Shops and Antique stores to find good buys on the real stuff.  Later, we went to the mall, thrift stores and flea markets hunting for our treasures.
